The opening day of Judo Grand Prix, Ulaanbaatar 2014, was hotly-contested as a wealth of world-class judoka fought for precious world ranking points ahead of next month’s World Championships in Chelyabinsk, Russia. Mongolia’s first female judo world champion MUNKHBAT Urantsetseg (MGL) defended her 2013 Ulaanbaatar Grand Prix title by beating world number 26 JEONG Bo Kyeong (KOR).

The Mongolian star was trailing with 15 seconds left having received shido penalties for passivity but Munkhbat was never fazed and fought back to hold her opponent down with a sankaku-gatame for ippon.

In the first semi-final Munkhbat downed Dusseldorf Grand Prix winner WU Shugen (CHN) with a bold effort against her game foe. Munkhbat opened the scoring after a minute with a yuko from a sasae-tsurikomi-ashi and sat on that lead for the subsequent three minutes as she conserved energy for the final. In the second semi-final the hosts were second best as Budapest Grand Prix bronze medallist GALBADRAKH Otgontsetseg (MGL) fell to Jeju Grand Prix runner-up JEONG Bo Kyeong (KOR) by a solitary shido for passivity. GALBADRAKH lost out to Munkhbat in last year’s final but had to settle for a bronze medal bout this time around after tasting defeat in the last fight of the opening session in Ulaanbaatar.

The first bronze medal was awarded to GALBADRAKH who ruthlessly disposed of 23-year-old KIM Sol Mi (PRK) who earned a surprise fifth-place at the World Championships last year. GALBADRAKH, 22, secured back-to-back Grand Prix bronze medals as she went ahead with an ura-nage for waza-ari after 52 seconds and added a yuko from the same technique. GALBADRAKH scored another yuko from a sumi-gaeshi with one minute left and ended the contest in style by countering an uchi-mata with a hane-goshi for a match-winning waza-ari. The second bronze medal was won by WU as she defeated 19-year-old JIANG Yahong (CHN) who has two fifth-place finishes at the Qingdao Grand Prix as the best results on her resume. WU won by a single yuko after JIANG was penalised for passivity.
