Tagir Khaibulaev had a great return in judo and was awarded as best male judoka of the event. The Russian Olympic Champion won gold U100kg at the Grand Prix of Ulaanbaatar.

The semi final between Khaibulaev and Dimitri Peters GER (bronze) was a repeat of the 2012 Olympic semi final in London and the outcome was an ippon for the Russian. “I was not at my best today, perhaps only 60%”, said Khaibulaev. In the final it was the turn of Karl-Richard Frey GER (silver) to see if he could upset the Olympic champion. But it was not to be and Khainulaev threw Frey with a strong eri-seoi-nage for ippon. “I was pleased with my performance today particularly because I have been out for so long. I genuinely did not expect to perform as well as I did and for that reason I can leave here happy”, said Khaibulaev.

Russia’s 29-year-old Olympic champion Tagir Khaibulaev (RUS) came back in the IJF World Judo Tour with a breathtaking reminder of his quality. The Russian ace, who was last seen in 2013 taking silver at the Buenos Aires Pan American Open, defeated Samsun Grand Prix bronze medallist Karl-Richard Frey (GER) with a drop seoi-nage to secure his fifth ippon from five fights as Khaibulaev punched the air in celebration.

In the first semi-final KHAIBULAEV defeated Olympic bronze medallist Dimitri PETERS (GER) by ippon while FREY held firm against Asian Championships bronze medallist CHO Guham (KOR) with two shido penalties against the latter for passivity and only one offence against the German for the same reason.

The first bronze medal was won Havana Grand Prix silver medallist Flavio ORLIK (SUI) as former heavyweight judoka CHO Guham (KOR) ran out of steam as he fell by a modified kata-garuma and yuko-otoshi which bored earned waza-ari scores. The second bronze medal was won by PETERS who bested Prague European Open runner-up Miklos CIRJENICS (HUN) by shime-waza after just 49 seconds.
