Two-time European champion Sirazhudin MAGOMEDOV (RUS) topped the podium of the Grand Prix Zagreb for the first time since he won his second European title in 2012. The 27-year-old Russian was awarded victory in the -81kg final after Havana Grand Prix silver medallist Travis STEVENS (USA) was unable to compete due to a foot injury as fans were unfortunately denied seeing what would have surely been a superb final between two top-class judoka.

In the first semi-final STEVENS swept past Sindelfingen European Cup winner Matteo MARCONCINI (ITA) by wazari-awasette-ippon but had a noticeable limp as he made his way back into the warm up area. In the second semi-final MAGOMEDOV, who suffered a rib injury during the course of the contest, resisted the efforts of Madrid European Open bronze medallist Laszlo CSOKNYAI (HUN). MAGOMEDOV was keen to put on a show as part of a 14-strong Russian team but on this occasion had to settle for a safe passage to the final by way of two shido penalties given to the Hungarian.
The first bronze medal was won by World Team Championships silver medallist Murat KHABACHIROV (RUS) who held down CSOKNYAI with a tate-shiho-gatame for 20 seconds and ippon. The second bronze medal was captured by MARCONCINI who dispatched Tbilisi Grand Prix bronze medallist Asaf CHEN (ISR) with a tomoe-nage for ippon with six seconds left. MARCONCINI led with a waza-ari from a
seoi-nage in a one-sided contest.
