Tokyo Grand Slam silver medallist Levani MATIASHVILI (GEO) defeated European silver medallist Adam OKRUASHVILI (GEO) in a fascinating battle between the hosts’ leading men in the heavyweight category. Hulking heavyweight OKRUASHVILI fell to his young teammate MATIASHVILI who showed his brute force throughout the day.

The 21-year-old contained the best attacking efforts from his compatriot who failed with osoto-gari and could not solve the puzzle posed by his domestic and international rival. OKRUASHVILI was tellingly penalised twice on his way to succumbing as he had to settle for silver on shido penalties.

In the first semi-final OKRUASHVILI defeated Asian Games bronze medallist Abdullo TANGRIEV (UZB) by a waza-ari score while teammate MATIASHVILI bested former Sofia European Open bronze medallist Oleksandr GORDIIENKO by ippon from a seoi-otoshi.

The first bronze medal went to GORDIIENKO who drove Anton KRIVOBOKOV (RUS) down to the tatami with a thunderous tani-otoshi for ippon having led with a yuko from a harai-makikomi. The second bronze medal went to world number 55 Aslan KAMBIEV (RUS) as TANGRIEV could not reappear to take his place in the contest due to injury.
