The preparations for next year's European Judo Championships in Kazan are going according the schedule. The Championships is set to be held at the Tatneft Arena from April 21 to 24 and the venue was visited as part of the inspection by EJU vice-president Michal Vachun and Martin Poiger, head of EJU main office. Accompanied by Valentin Khabirov, vice-president and executive director of the RJF, the EJU assessed the arena’s suitability for hosting competition and hosting official events.

Vachun: “The conditions are very good, we look forward to the Championship, the 'Tatneft Arena' has excellent conditions for the athletes for their training and warming up. The Organising Committee have a great experience in the Summer Universiade, I am confident that we have developed a great team.”

Kazan is also expected share hosting duties for the second edition of the European Games in 2019, with 2014 Winter Olympic hosts Sochi, should Russia address serious doping problems.

The EJU hope the Championships will build on the success of the 2015 edition of the event, which was held as part of the inaugural European Games in Azerbaijan’s capital city Baku.

Besides the FISU Universiade Kazan also hosted the 2012 World Police Championships and Russian senior Championships in 2011. This year the Russian Cadet Championships were held in Kazan.

In 2012 Russia also organised the European Championships, in Chelyabinsk. Since 2009 the event is held in the east of Europe, excepted for 2014 when the Europeans were held in Judo country France, in Montpellier. Since 2009 Tbilisi, Vienna, Istanbul, Chelyabinsk, Budapest, Montpellier and Baku (European Games) hosted the EJU event. There are no World Championships in 2016 due to the Olympic Games.
