Japanese judoka Akira Sone is the current 2019 World Champion. She became Junior World Champion in Zagreb in 2017. She claimed the World Cadet title in Sarajevo in 2015. She took silver at the Grand Slam in Tokyo in 2016 when she was 16. Sone won the World Junior Mixed Team Championships in Zagreb. She took a silver medal at the Grand Slam in Osaka in 2018. Sone won the World Masters in 2018 in Guangzhou and Grand Prix in Zagreb in 2019. World Mixed team gold in Tokyo in 2019.

World champion Sone Akira (JPN) defeated heavyweight legend Idalys Ortiz (CUB) in the women’s heavyweight final to confirm selection for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. World number one Ortiz finished second best against world number two Sone in a rematch of the 2019 Worlds final in Tokyo after being caught with an o-uchi-gari after two minutes of golden score.
