Japanese Izumi Mao won her country’s first gold medal at the Ekaterinburg Grand Slam 2019 with victory over double Olympic bronze medallist Mayra Aguiar of Brazil in the U78kg final. World number 67 and Tunis Grand Prix winner Izumi submitted former world champion Aguiar with a strangle outside the area to deny the Brazilian back-to-back Grand Slam gold medals. Read more

Izumi Mao signed for the only gold medal for Japan this weekend at the Grand Prix in Tunis. Karen Stevenson of the Netherlands who finished on the third step of the podium at the World Masters of Saint Petersburg at the end of the last season, faced Izumi Mao, whose best result so far was a gold medal at the European Open in Sofia in 2017.
