Kosovo judoka Akil Gjakova won the Grand Prix in Zagreb in 2018 and Grand Slam of Paris as first male athlete of Kosovo. Gjakova became European Cadet Champion U18 in 2013 in Tallinn. He won silver at the Grand Prix in Tunis in 2018. He took a silver medal at European U23 Championships in 2017 held in Podgorica. Akil became U23 European Champion in Gyor in 2018. He took a silver medal at the Grand Prix in The Hague in 2018 and won the gold at the Grand Prix in Budapest in the 2019.

Kosovo has got several top female judokas, namely Majlinda Kelmendi, Distria Krasniqi and Nora Gjakova. But it's got one strong male contender too in the form of Akil Gjakova, who has to date won three IJF World Tour gold medals. The Kosovo Olympic Judo Team is Quarantined, Isolated in a Training Room. The Kosovo judo team has been self-isolating as it prepares for the Tokyo Olympics. Olympic champion Majlinda Kelmendi, four other judokas and five staff members have closed themselves in at a training center in Peja, 85 kilometers (50 miles) west of Pristina. Read more

Akil Gjakova delivers gold for Kosovo in Budapest

Akil Gjakova captured Kosovo’s third gold medal in Budapest at the Grand Prix but the first of the golden variety after a faultless display on day two. 2018 Paris winner Gjakova threw 20-year-old Orenburg European Cup winner Georgii Elbakiev (RUS) with a sumptuous sasae-tsurikomi-ashi for his second score to seal gold while Elbakiev will not be too disappointed having announced his arrival on the international stage with his first IJF World Judo Tour medal.
