He captured bronze at the European Games in Minsk. He won World junior bronze U81 in 2013. He won silver at the Grand Slam in Baku in 2017 and 2019. He captured bronze at the Grand Prix in Antalya in 2018. He won the Grand Prix bronze in Zagreb. Mehdiyev won the Grand Prix in Tashkent in 2018. He won Grand Slam gold in Düsseldorf.

What a year it has been so far for Axel Clerget of France. At the age of 30 he is still one of the favourites for the European Championships gold medal in Warsaw U90kg. The Frenchman would normally get heavy competition of Alexandre Iddir, but so far Clerget is the man. Varlam Liparteliani left this category but gave us back Beka Gviniashvili. Islam Bozbayev of Kazakhstan won his first Grand Slam title at the expense of Almaty Grand Prix bronze medallist Mammadali Mehdiyev of Azerbaijan. French Axel Clerget won U90kg gold at the Grand Prix of Almaty with a win against Chinese Asian Championships bronze medallist Cheng Xunzhao in the final. Cheng came to Almaty holding 30th position on the Olympic qualification list and the one-time IJF Grand Prix winner (Qingdao 2012) fell behind to a waza-ari from a harai-makikomi and Clerget.
