Saeid Mollaei of Iran became World Champion in 2018 in Baku and won world bronze in 2017 in Budapest. He won bronze medals at the Grand Prix in Samsun and Ulaanbaatar in 2015. He fought at the World Championships in 2013 and 2015 and he was fifth in 2019 after he lost his last two fights deliberately. Since then Saeid fights for Mongolia invited by the President. In 2018 he won the Grand Slam in Düsseldorf and gold in Hohhot in 2019. Mollaei took bronze at the Grand Slam in Ekaterinburg in 2018.

Iranian top athlete Mohammad Mohammadi withdrew for the World Championships. Mohammadi didn't go to Japan at all. Saeid Mollaei was also under pressure but did make the accreditation and we are awaiting the draw. on Saturday A very sad moment in sports as Iran agreed with the Judo Federation to respect the Olympic Charter and its non-discrimination principle and the Iran Judo Federation shall fully comply with the charter and the IJF statutes. Mohammad Mohammadi will not be included in the draw on Saturday. The Iranian bronze medallist of last year’s World Championships is in a category with Israelian fighter Tohar Butbul. That said, also World Champion Saeid Mollaei is in doubt for prolonging his second World title in a division with Sagi Muki. Muki and Mollaei can only meet in the final or a bronze contest. Takanori Nagase claims second Grand Prix title in a month

Former world champion Nagase Takanori of Japan won his second Grand Prix title in July as he followed up on his Montreal win by going unbeaten in Zagreb. Olympic bronze medallist Nagase bested London 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Antoine Valois-Fortier (CAN) by ippon in the final in a first-time meeting between two of the leading judoka in one of judo’s most fascinating weight categories. Saeid Mollaei repeats Worlds final win over Fujiwara

World champion Saeid Mollaei of Iran underlined his superiority in a stacked weight category by winning a rematch of the 2018 Worlds final in spectacular fashion. Mollaei earned his first Grand Prix gold medal by throwing Worlds-bound Fujiwara Sotaro (JPN) with a sode-tsurikomi-goshi for ippon which was arguably the ippon of the day. Read more

Three World Champions present at Grand Prix Hohhot

Again the Japanese team cancelled most of their top favourites for the Grand Prix in Hohhot. The team of 28 is reduced to 7, 5 women, 2 men. Interesting is the return of World Champion Uta Abe in the category U52kg.
