Spanish judoka Nikoloz Sherazadishvili became World Champion in 2018 in Baku as first male World champion of Spain. He won European Championships bronze in 2018 in Tel Aviv. He was born in Tbilisi. Nikoloz fought the World Junior Championships final in 2014 and in 2015. He took a bronze medal at the IJF Masters in St. Petersburg in 2017 and won gold in 2018 in Guangzhou and Madrid. Nikoloz won the Grand Slam in Brasilia and Abu Dhabi in 2019 and gold in Paris in 2020.

Not former Spanish world champion Nikoloz Sherazadishvili but youngster Lasha Bekauri from Georgia caught the gold medal at the Grand Slam in Tel Aviv. Nikoloz Sherazadishvili was born in Georgia but is the first male World Champion for Spain. He lives there since he was 14 but feels connected to both countries. "Niko Shera" as they call him in Spain is in between two flags. When the young Nikoloz was 14, his family moved to Spain for work, and Sherazadishvili joined the Brunete judo club just outside the capital Madrid. That club was run by three-time Olympian Joaquín Ruiz, or "Quino", who remains Sherazadishvili's coach to this day. Read more
