Lasha Shavdatuashvili won the Olympic title U66kg in 2012 and took bronze U73kg in Rio in 2016. The Georgian judoka won European bronze in 2012 and the European title in 2013 U66kg. Switched to U73 and won medals in Düsseldorf and Tbilisi and won the Grand Prix Almaty. In 2017 he won silver at the Grand Prix Düsseldorf 2017. He took a silver medal at the IJF Masters in St. Petersburg in 2017. Lasha took gold at the Grand Prix in Tbilisi.

Youngster Akil Gjakova of Kosovo made history for his country for the second successive event to maintain his imperious start to 2018. World champion Hashimoto Soichi won his second World Judo Masters title in a row as he returned to the top of the podium after a minor blip at home when he won bronze at the Tokyo Grand Slam two weeks ago.
