Shohei Ono earns respect with Olympic gold in style
Reigning world champion Shohei Ono has claimed Japan’s first judo gold of Rio 2016 on Monday, ending a run of five bronze medals in the sport over the first three days of the Games. Ono beat Azerbaijan’s Rustam Orujov by ippon in the men’s U73kg division to claim gold on his Olympic debut, adding it to his two world championships titles. Read more

Sensational Van Tichelt in the semi final vs Ono
It was an exciting day of judo at the Carioca 2 Arena in Rio. With the men U73kg and women U57kg on show, there were absolute top matches in the quarter finals and the semis. The quarter finals were decisive again with a surprising line up in pool A. Lightweight Dirk van Tichelt had beaten 2015 World bronze medallist An Chang-Rim of Korea. The Belgian judoka created a nice path to the semi final once he had outsmarted Denis Iartcev with fine judo and Van Tichelt seems to be in the form of his life. Read more

Rio2016 Olympic Judo Preview Men U73kg
Shohei Ono of Japan is the absolute favourite for the Olympic title on 8 August. However, nothing is as it seems at Olympic level. Ono threw Riner at a training camp, but throwing his opponents in Rio may be tougher. In 2012, Russia won a second gold medal thanks to Mansur Isaev. With Isaev being unable to defend his title as he misses the Olympics, it’s about time that Ono takes credit of his reputation. Read more

Soichi Hashimoto showed a great transition on the ground when he defeated Ganbaatar Odbayar in the final by a rare armlock. Perfect ne-waza with a slow flying juji and pulled the right arm of Ganbaatar into an armlock. Read more

Mirali Sharipov grabs gold against teammate Boboyev
Mirali Sharipov (UZB) took the victory at the Grand Slam in Baku. The Asian Championships bronze medallist won the domestic bragging rights against teammate and Tashkent Grand Prix bronze medallist Giyosjon Boboyev (UZB) as he came out on top in their U73kg final. Boboyev (UZB) led by a waza-ari score after Sharipov tried to lift up his teammate but his compatriot countered with ashi-waza for the opening score. Read more
