Grand Prix newcomer Takeshi Sasaki stuns Olympic champion
Sasaki Takeshi of Japan shook up the U81kg category at the Grand Slam in Hohhot by humbling Olympic champion Khasan Khalmurzaev (RUS) after only 65 seconds in the final. Ekaterinburg Grand Slam silver medallist Sasaki debuted on the IJF World Judo Tour at his home Grand Slam in December and in typically Japanese style has been quick to make his presence felt. Fujiwara Sotaro third teen to win the title in Paris
Youngster Fujiwara Sotaro of Japan struck in the U81kg category as the 19-year-old won his first major honour on the IJF World Judo Tour in only his second Grand Slam appearance and first outside of Japan. While his opponent, world number 57 Lee, was the aggressor from the outset the Japanese newcomer settled into his rhythm and threw with a left-sided uchi-mata for ippon. Read more
French team good for 17 medals at European Cup Malaga
The team of France dominated the European Cup in Malaga with six gold medals and nineteen medals in total. A strong Korean was present and took five gold medals. Host Spain was unlucky with three lost finals but captured eleven medals in total. Read more

World Champion Gwak practises with Universiade gold in Taipei
Current World Champion Gwak Dong-Han of Korea did a successful practice for the World Championships next week in Budapest. With a gold medal at the Universiade Gwak was likely one of the last medal winners of all participants in Budapest. At the Universiade in Taipei he won his category U90kg in the final against Russian Stanislav Retinskii, a former Ukrainian judoka. Gwak led by a wazari and didn’t let Retinskii escape and took the gold. Read more

For many people Avtandili Tchrikishvili is the undisputed favourite for the Olympic title. However, for others, Takanori Nagase is the man to beat. If you’re from Pan America, maybe Stevens or Valois-Fortier is your pick. Athletes from all over the world can win in Rio. The U81kg category will take place on 9 August and will definitely be fantastic. It’s the category with the most participants amongst the events.
