Austrian Kathrin Unterwurzacher won the European U23 Championships in 2011 in Tyumen U63kg. She took bronze at the European Championships in Warsaw in 2017. She claimed the gold medal at the Grand Prix in Tashkent in 2019 and 2017. Unterwurzacher won gold at the Grand Prix in Tbilisi in 2016. She finished 7th at the Rio Olympic Games. After the Games she took gold at the Grand Slam in Tokyo in 2016. She won gold at the European Open in Oberwart in 2017 and 2015.

398 athletes from 68 nations kick-off for the Grand Prix in Samsun on Friday. Of course a big team from Turkey with 52 athletes will compete and the eyecatchers are the women fighting at Day 1 U48kg where Dilara Lokmanhekim and Ebru Sahin will fight for the top positions. Both are potential Olympic participants for Turkey, but only one can go. They are ranked closely, Lokmanheim at 13, Sahin at 14 in the latest Olympic Ranking. Tbilisi winner Noel van ‘t End of the Netherlands did good business this week in the World Ranking as he jumped from 5 to 2 U90kg this week after his victory. Back to his best ever position where he was during his knee injury last year, but while being injured he lost a few places. In the final U63kg of the Grand Prix in Tbilisi Austrian Kathrin Unterwurzacher defeated three-time Grand Prix bronze medallist Gemma Howell of Great Britain to celebrate U63kg gold. Georgia have another two chances for a gold medal at the Grand Prix in Tbilisi. The final U73kg is between Georgian Nugzari Tatalashvili and Mongolian Odbayar Ganbaatar. But Tatalashvili is a warned man, he lost his previous two bouts against the Mongolian, both in Astana last year at the individual and team event. Another home favourite Lasha Shavdatuashvili lost his semi against Ganbaatar and will now fight Oberwart finallist Marcelo Contini of Brazil, who lost to Tatalashvili in the quarter final. Read more
