Cuban judoka Idalys Ortiz became Olympic Champion in 2012 in London and won silver in 2016 in Rio. Ortiz had already won Olympic bronze in 2008 in Beijing. She was World Champion in 2013 and 2014. In 2019 and 2018 she won silver and in 2015 she won World bronze in Astana. She won various Panam Championships and Games and captured the gold medal at the Grand Slam in Paris and Düsseldorf in 2019. She won the Grand Prix in Budapest and Hohhot in 2019 and her first Grand Slam gold in Osaka in 2018.

Almaty winner Elios Manzi moves from 61 to 35 this week in the World Ranking U60kg and straight into the qualification for Rio at place 35, a giant jump for the young Italian. Unseeded Joshiro Maruyama had no points at all and is now the number 54 of the world U66kg. Read more

Cuban Olympic champion Idalys Ortiz prepared to defend her title this summer by taking a confidence boosting win in the women’s heavyweight category. World number two Ortiz, 26, who was possibly wearing her gold backpatch as the London 2012 winner for the final time, defeated European champion Kayra Sayit (TUR) on shido penalties in a tentative final. Loic Pietri back in business at Grand Prix Almaty

At this week’s Grand Prix of Almaty some of the last points are for grab, but it won’t be easy for the 399 participants. The category U81kg is as usual the most competitive with 45 participants and includes the comeback of 2013 World Champion Loic Pietri. The Frenchman may face home boy Aziz Kalkamanuly or dare devil Frank de Wit in his first fight. Many competitors are in that same pool for those last points to secure qualification. Pietri won World silver in Astana last year, so he is still the favourite and nearly almost medals where he starts. Read more

Last sprint for best 8 in IJF World Ranking after continental judo championships

Rustam Orujov of Azerbaijan is back at the number one position in the IJF World Ranking after his European title U73kg. It’s the only change after the continental championships of the highest seeds. PanAm Champion Arthur Margelidon put himself in the top 12, ninth at the clean Olympic ranking, where the first 8 will be seeded. Read more

Panam perfect practise in Havana for Olympic Games

At the second day of the Pan American Championships in Havana Brazil added another two titles, but the home crowd was more happy with the two victories of the Cuban athletes. Cuba won eleven medals in total and Jose Armenteros won the gold U100kg and Idalys Ortiz was the best +78kg. Read more
