Hedvig Karakas is one of the finest Hungarian judoka who won bronze at the Grand Slam Tokyo in 2015. As World Junior Champion, Karakas won bronze at the 2009 World Championships and was fifth at the Olympic Games in London, 7th in Rio and 7th at the 2015 World Championships. European Games silver in 2015. She won six world cup titles. In 2018 she took a silver medal at the Grand Slam in Düsseldorf and GP Zagreb and Budapest bronze.

Rafaela Silva back to World level challenger

Brazil’s first female world judo champion Rafaela Silva is back to her best after pitching a 100% record at the Tbilisi Grand Prix. The 23-year-old Silva won all four of her contests by ippon and saved her best score for the final as she caught Havana Grand Prix bronze medallist Nora Gjakova of Kosovo by surprise with a flying juji-gatame with 90 seconds left for gold. Brazil’s Rio 2016 hope, beat Olympic and world champion Matsumoto Kaori (JPN) with the same technique at the Tokyo Grand Slam in December. Read more

Marti Malloy starts Olympic year with victory in Havana

In the women’s U57kg in Havana’s Grand Prix, once again the top seeded athlete, American Marti Malloy confirmed her position and entered the final after having defeated the Brazilian 2013 World Champion Rafaela Silva in the semi-final. Surprise final U57kg but Japan dominates all categories

Once again a Japanese athlete had the possibility to win gold in Tokyo as Yoshida Tsukasa (JPN), already winner of a Grand Slam this year, in Tyumen, Russia, entered the final to face Hélène Receveaux (FRA). It is interesting to note that none of the top seeded athletes qualified for the final. The biggest surprise came from the defeat of current Olympic and world champion and national hero, Matsumoto Kaori, who was arm-locked by the 2013 world champion, Rafaela Silva (BRA). Read more

Possible repetition of 2012 Olympic Final U57kg

In fact no big surprises at the World Championships for women U57kg. Nicely distributed over Asia, Europe and Pan America. World Ranking leader Corina Caprioriu won her pool after she bested Hedvig Karakas of Hungary in the quarter final. The Hungarian has an excellent tournament though and defeated tough judoka such as Filzmoser, Amaris and Quintavalle and had to do much more effort than Caprioriu. Read more
