Russian judoka Kirill Denisov won silver U90kg at the 2015 World Championships and bronze U100kg in 2017. Six times he finished in the top five. Denisov won the European title in 2011, 2013 and the European Games in 2015, he won bronze U100kg in 2017. He won five World Championships medals and finished fifth at the London Olympic Games. In his new weight category U100kg he took quite a few medals. He took silver at the Grand Slam of Ekaterinburg in 2019. World Mixed team bronze in Tokyo in 2019.

In the final of the men’s U100kg at Brasilia’s Grand Slam Kentaro Iida (WRL 15) had the measure of Rafael Buzacarini (BRA-WRL-22) as the Japanese youngster impressed his coach and legendary champion Inoue Kosei. The 21-year-old, who has often been dubbed the ‘new Inoue’, has a devastating uchi-mata just like this mentor but it was his morote-seoi-nage which earned his second Grand Slam gold medal with 64 seconds remaining on the clock. At the Grand Slam of Brasilia former world champion Nikoloz Sherazadishvili of Spain defeated former world silver medallist Ivan Felipe Silva Morales of Cuba in a rematch of the 2018 Worlds final. The Spaniard extended his winning record over the Cuban to 3-1 with a trademark uchi-mata which was worth a waza-ari score which separated the rivals after four minutes of compelling action. Korea is by far the most successful country winning the Grand Slam title in Tokyo for men. Korean men have captured 11 titles since the first Grand Slam in 2008. Kim SungMin was the most successful wining three editions. Wang Ki-Chun won twice. Still it’s not easy for foreigners to win in the home of judo. Only 16 foreign men won the Grand Slam on Tokyo.
