Brazilian Mariana Silva was the sensation U63kg at the Rio Olympic Games, but finished fifth. Silva won bronze at the Pan American Games in Toronto in 2015. The middleweight won a few World Cups starting in 2014 in Buenos Aires and prolonged that title in 2015. In 2015 Silva won the World Military Games in 2015 in Mungyeong. She won silver at the Grand Prix in Samsun and bronze at the Grand Slam in Abu Dhabi in 2016. She took bronze at the Grand Slam in Ekaterinburg in 2017.

German judoka Martyna Trajdos topped the Grand Slam medal podium in Russia to cast herself forward as one of the top contenders for the World Championships. Juul Franssen shows Olympic ambitions with Grand Slam gold

Dutch judoka Juul Franssen won the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam with a victory over Austrian European Championships silver medallist Kathrin Unterwurzacher in the U63kg final. Paris Grand Slam silver medallist and World Judo Masters silver medallist Franssen will now break into the top 10 on the world ranking list as she tied up Unterwurzacher in osaekomi for 20 seconds to win her maiden gold medal on the Grand Slam stage.
