With the Senior European Judo Championships 2024 set to commence in Zagreb, all eyes are on the Croatian women’s team as they aim to secure European titles in their respective weight categories. Despite the pressure mounting, the team is prepared to capitalize on the home advantage and showcase their prowess on the international stage.

In the -63kg category, Katarina Kristo and Iva Oberan represent Croatia, both eager to make their mark. Kristo has been in impressive form in 2024, claiming a silver medal in the Paris Grand Slam and demonstrating her potential for success. However, they face formidable opponents, including Gili Sharir from Israel and Ozbas Szofi from Hungary, who are seeded to challenge for the title.

Moving on to the -70kg category, Barbara Matic, a two-time World Champion and current world number one, leads the Croatian charge. Despite facing a challenging journey due to injury, Matic is determined to add another title to her name. Supported by Lara Cvjetko, Croatia aims to dominate the category, although they face stiff competition from Elisavet Teltsidou from Greece and Miriam Butkereit from Germany.

As the championships unfold, the Croatian women’s team remains focused and determined to deliver exceptional performances in front of the home crowd. With their sights set on European titles, they are ready to embrace the challenge and etch their names in the annals of judo history.

Stay tuned for updates and highlights as the Croatian women’s team battles for glory at the Senior European Judo Championships 2024.

Barbara Matic profile:

Croatia's top judoka, with an impressive track record, is poised for a favorable draw at the upcoming Olympics, providing some relief in the early rounds. Despite the term "easy" being relative at such a prestigious event, securing pole position can offer a slight advantage. This will mark Matic's third attempt at securing a coveted Olympic medal, having previously gone unplaced in Rio and achieved fifth place in Tokyo. With an upward trajectory in her performances, there's optimism for her podium chances in Paris. Having clinched two world titles, she's proven her ability to defeat any opponent. However, the ultimate question remains: can she overcome the pressure and challenges of the big day? The Olympics present a unique atmosphere, where success demands more than just skill and hard work; it requires a touch of magic as well.
