Merivan Tankos switches from Netherlands to Turkey
Another Dutch judoka switches nation. Merivan Tankos got approval of the IJF to switch to Turkey. Tankos should fill the gap U70kg of the Turkish team, however there’s a lot of competition with Sükran Bakacak, Aycan Durmusoglu, Semanur Erdogan, Mihriban Öner and Rukiyye Ozerdem who lives in Austria.
Nineteen year old Tankos won bronze at the Dutch National Championships U70kg in 2014. She is extremely happy with the support of the IJF and will now focus to qualify for senior level events. But will first start at European Cup to see if there’s progression.
Turkey has never reached a top 5 position in any senior qualification event. The last medal achieved U70kg in a European Cup level event was in 2012, but never outside Turkey.
Tankos already competed at the Turkish Junior Championships where she won bronze. Gold was taken by Semanur Erdogan, silver by Mihriban Öner and the second bronze to Gulsum Kucukyazici.
Tankos is the third Dutch woman who competed at U70kg and switched to another country: Linda Bolder and Esther Stam.
