Georgian judoka Beka Gviniashvili is 2013 and 2015 World Junior Champion and is the most successful junior athlete ever also with the Georgian Junior team. In 2016 he switched from U90kg to U100kg with successful event and amazing victories including the Grand Slam in Baku, the guarantee for Rio. In 2017 he won the Grand Prix Düsseldorf 2017. He took bronze at the European Championships in Warsaw in 2017 U90kg.

Tough choices in Georgian selection for Worlds in Budapest

No Tchrikishvili, no Matiashvili, no Chkhvimiani, no Tatalashvili in the selection of the Georgian mens team for the World Championships. The Georgians did choose to send two heavyweights instead of two lightweights or U81kg choices. Between Okruashvili and Matiashvili the more experienced fighter was preferred but both failed this weekend to give a good outlook for the World Championships. Aleksandar Kukolj claims first ever European title for Serbia

Aleksandar Kukolj defeated Alex Clerget in the anticipated final at the European Championships in Warsaw. The numbers one and two of the seeding list reached the final. Kukolj really managed to continue his successful season. With fine groundwork, he got Clerget into an osaekomi, even producing an armlock, which made Clerget tap out. Read more

What a year it has been so far for Axel Clerget of France. At the age of 30 he is still one of the favourites for the European Championships gold medal in Warsaw U90kg. The Frenchman would normally get heavy competition of Alexandre Iddir, but so far Clerget is the man. Varlam Liparteliani left this category but gave us back Beka Gviniashvili. Gviniashvili defeats Khalmurzaev in super final U90kg

Two top level athletes were in the final of the Grand Prix: Beka Gviniashvili and Khusen Khalmurzaev. Almost a year ago both won the Grand Prix in Samsun in different weight categories; now, both competitors stepped onto the tatami at U90kg. Their last encounter was in 2012 at European Junior Championships when the Georgian won the contest. As it happened, the 2017 edition of their matchup left the judo fans as winner, as well.
