Khasan Khalmurzaev of Russia won the Olympic title in Rio in 2016 in the final against Travis Stevens. In 2016 he became European Champion and won the Grand Prix of Havana. The twinbrother of Khusen won the Universiade title in 2015 and was European Junior Champion in 2011 and won two medals at European U23 Championships. Khasan was World U17 Champion in Budapest in 2009 U73kg.

The World Ranking has changed quite a bit due to the reduced points gained at the 2015 and 2014 World Championships. Athletes such as Yeldos Smetov and Yuri Alvear who benefit of their Olympic performances in combination with the performances at World Championships, lost points again, but will obviously still be in the top of their divisions. Russian judokas, along with Russian fencers, have been among the top medalists at the Rio Olympics. The Olympic Games Games Judo Tournament has come to an end with Japan leading the medal table as expected, however the Asian countries were expected to dominate much more. Khasan Khalmurzaev didn’t have to fight Tchrikishvili or Nagase, but did have a tough list of rivals to overcome, but took the gold medal when he needed it.
