Turkish judoka Busra Katipoglu won a bronze medal at the Grand Prix in Tashkent in 2015 and bronze in Minsk. She won silver at the Grand Prix Qingdao in 2015. Katipoglu was Turkish senior champion in 2010. She won European Junior bronze in 2009 and 2011. She won bronze at the Grand Slam in Baku in 2016. She won a bronze medal at the Grand Slam in Baku in 2017.

British Alice Schlesinger defended her 2016 Baku title with a mature performance against Tunis African Open silver medallist Andreja Leski (SLO). The modest Briton, who was making her post-Olympic return to competition, saw off world number 63 Leski on the ground as World number 12 Schlesinger trapped the body of her opponent and from there worked the arm-lock until the 20-year-old Slovenian had to submit. Dusseldorf Grand Prix silver medallist Alice Schlesinger (GBR) played down her day in the post-event interview but the modest Briton excelled in Baku as she won all five of her contests by the maximum score. Schlesinger won her first Grand Slam gold medal for Great Britain to secure 500 precious qualification points which edges her closer towards potentially being seeded at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The strong Chinese women so far had only won the Grand Prix of Qingdao twice in the history of this event since 2009. 2008 Olympic Champion Qiuli Yang won twice in 2009 and 2010, but today Yang Junxia added another Chinese title in the category U63kg. In the final she defeated Busra Katipoglu of Turkey who also experienced her first Grand Prix final. Read more

The second day of the Grand Prix final in Qingdao delivered some surprising finals. In the men’s categories U73 and U81 both finallists have never met before. Rustam Orujov will face Soichi Hashimoto. U81kg Goki Maruyama and Wang Ki-Chun will meet in an interesting Asian final. Edwige Gwend captures second Grand Prix victory

Italian Edwige Gwend won the second Grand Prix title of her career as she surpassed Samsun Grand Prix silver medallist of Austria Hilde Drexler in the U63kg final in Tashkent. Gwend, who won the Tbilisi Grand Prix last year, was effective and hard-working as she gained the maximum world ranking points (300) ahead of a long Asian tour and three upcoming Grand Slams. A single shido against Drexler was the decisive moment as both judoka were unable to produce a score. Read more
